I believe that good stories are discovered—and frequently independently rediscovered—not made; I do not imagine that I own anything more than my own telling. That is what copyright originally protected: the right to create and sell copies of your writing. But when records of stories became valuable, there suddenly emerged an incentive to hoard stories themselves as jealously as dragons’ treasure, clawing back derivatives and retellings.

I believe that stories are only made richer by engagement, and that an openness of this kind will be to the benefit of everyone involved. Not only does a story itself become smoother as it passes through the rock-tumblers of other minds, but people spending their time and effort to expand a world that has caught their interest makes more routes for people to discover the original material, which helps the original author, and makes more content for other fans to engage with, which helps the community.

I’m not aware of there currently being any fanworks based on anything I’ve written, but if fans ever wanted to make some, I would want those people to at least have a chance of getting something in return for their trouble. I give my blessing to fanworks of all kinds. (Please just don’t push it with trying to re-print my books verbatim, or suing me—or, I don’t know, each other—for possibly being inspired by your work in return. Share-alike, okay?)
