Logging in is not required for viewing pages, but it is required for editing them.

Creating a user account entails coming up with a username (your real name or a nickname) and a password. A user account is created only once. You are then "logged in". The next time you want to log in, you only have to supply your same username and password again. Edits you make are recorded under your username.

Why is logging in required?

The Evection Project aims to be a trusted resource. Requiring that editors have accounts prevents much potential vandalism, in a way that is easy both for users and for admins. In addition to crediting your account with any edits you make, having an account gives you a talk page at UserTalk:YourUsername where other users can leave messages for you.

You have to supply an email address, again, in the interests of avoiding spam edits. This email address will be used to reset your password if you forget it, and to receive automatic notifications of those events you set in your preferences. You can also receive emails from other users if you turn that on in your preferences (the user who emails you will not know your email address), and email other users and if they allow it (your email address will be disclosed on any email you send).

You will be able to edit as soon as you have created your account and verified your email address, and at that point you will also be able to set your own preferences.

How to log in

First, make sure that your browser accepts cookies. Some browsers can accept or reject cookies from individual sites; configure your browser to accept cookies from evection.org.

Click on the Login link at the top right of the page. You will then be prompted to enter your username and password. If you haven't logged in before, you will need to create an account.

If you check the Remember my password box, you will not have to give your password again the next time you access this wiki from the same computer.

Choosing credentials

You may be unable to create an account if your username and/or password contains certain symbols (particularly the @ symbol, as well as certain non-Latin characters), or if it is too similar to that of an existing user. The system will reject a username that is already in use.

Forgot your credentials?

Your username is case sensitive.

You can make a request on the login screen for a temporary password to be sent to the email address you supplied when setting up your account.

Problems logging in?

If you appear to be able to log in, but as soon as you try to look at a page you appear logged out again, it is very likely a cookie problem. If you are certain that cookies are enabled, make sure that you haven't inadvertently listed the wiki's domain on a list of sites for which cookies are never allowed: this feature is available in all recent browsers. Also make sure your computer's date and time are set correctly; if they are not, cookies may expire before they are supposed to. Note that some firewall and ad-blocking software may interfere with the cookie that the wiki uses to keep a person logged in.

A user may occasionally be automatically logged out in between beginning an edit and saving it, or when switching between multiple pages open in multiple windows. This can be a result of your browser's cookie, cache, or firewall settings, but it shouldn't happen if you've checked the Remember my password box. However, it isn't wise to have your password remembered on a computer that can be accessed by more than one person (i.e. at the library, at work, at school).

Logging out

You can log out any time by clicking on your username on the top right of the page, and then the Log out link on the menu that drops down from it.
