Sega Corporation, which makes video games under the name Sega, created the Sonic the Hedgehog series, and now also creates the Angry Birds series. While Sega does not have a company-wide policy on fan works, it and its subsidiary Rovio have released statements on Sonic the Hedgehog and Angry Birds, respectively.

The Next Web reported that, in an official speech by Mikael Hed, then-CEO of Rovio (now owned by Sega), Hed stated that Rovio "only chases after people who produce unsafe products or those that damage brand perception."
Hed added, “We can learn a lot from the terrible way the music industry dealt with piracy. It would be futile to tackle it all… We embrace the pirates – as long as the product is well made, even if it’s not officially licensed it helps improve the brand."
